Day 50 at Home- February 27, 2013

Avery had an appointment with the feeding clinic on Tuesday. She is only gaining on average about 12 grams a day and they want her to gain 25-30/day. They then looked at her length and said she is proportionate so they aren't worried about it. They think she will be short and skinny like her mom. We all agreed on increasing her feedings to 80ml every 3 hours and skipping the feeding in the middle of the night. Her next appointment is in 3 weeks. I will be back at work so Tim will be taking her by himself.

Avery goes for her 6 month visit on Friday. She has been smiling a lot more lately which is so cute. Besides being held, she loves to sit upright so she can see what's going on.

I like my bouncer. I sit here so I can watch Mommy while she dries her hair in the morning.

This is an adorable outfit Mommy found for me at Marcs for $.99!

One day Lily sat on Mommy's and my lap at the same time! (By the way, ignore my bib. It's turned the wrong way and Mommy told me it says a bad word)

I am getting better at bottle feeding. The other day I took 55ml and 50ml. I average about 35ml a feeding but that is increasing!

I am also getting better at smiling. The proof is below!

Day 47 at Home- February 24, 2013

I posted a picture of Avery and I kangarooing for the first time on the Parents of Preemies Day page on facebook and I was selected as the picture of the week! I won a $30 giftcard to CanvasPop to get a picture printed on canvas. If you would like to visit their site, please see below.

There is a Parents of Preemies Day in Cleveland on March 10 at UH sponsored by the Graham's Foundation. I am pretty sure I will be attending this. Graham's foundation offers care packages to parents of preemies while they are in the NICU :-)

We have two appointments this week. One on Tuesday with the feeding clinic and one on Friday for Avery's 6 month check up! I can't believe she will be 6 months. (Don't tell Avery but she will be getting a lot of vaccinations at this appointment!)

If you wonder why Mommy and Daddy are stressed, it's because these are all my upcoming appointments!

Mommy and me snuggling before she and Daddy went out. Thanks Grandma S for watching me!

I like to play with the ears on my rocker

I look so cute when I am sleeping

I am practicing my smiling

 Hi :-)

Mommy and Daddy had me ride Chewie. I don't really think either of us liked it

More smiles

I was hanging out on the couch watching tv today

I look so cute when I am sitting up

Smiles! (I was really smiley one day)

Murph and Shannon came to visit me today. Their daughter (due in May) might become my new best friend!

Day 42 at Home- February 20, 2013

I don't have much to update since Sunday. We haven't had any appointments since then. Amazing, I know. We do have an appointment with Help Me Grow tomorrow. Avery has been doing pretty good with the bottle. She has been taking around 30ml for most feedings. If she gets up in the middle of the night, we don't bottle feed her. We just tube feed her. We don't want her to start any bad habits of wanting to be fed in the middle of the night :-)

And now for the pictures....

The fun trip I had from Hillcrest to Main Campus on New Years Eve only cost $1800! (Mommy called to get this straightened out today. They didn't have my insurance info on file. Hopefully Mommy and Daddy won't have to pay anything)

Is that crazy dog behind me again?

Ol' blue eyes...that's what they call me...not really, I just felt like saying that.

If there are two things I love it would be pacifiers and holding onto things

I am happy for once

Multiple people have gotten me stuffed animals, but that's Sophie. She is real and she doesn't really like me.

I love bath time!

Grandpa S is letting Scarlett give me a kiss

Grandpa is holding me. Normally he doesn't get to because Grandma hogs me :-) Just kidding Grandma, I love you!

I am embarrassed that Mommy and Daddy thought I would be big enough for this. Umm, yep, that is me facing towards the camera...lol At least my hair matches the colors on the exersaucer.

Naked baby!

Mommy, my toupee is on crooked. Just kidding, that is just Chewie's ear.

I'm so embarrassed that they posted that picture of me with Chewie's ear.

Scarlett likes to kiss my head.

So does Mommy

Day 39 at Home- February 17, 2013

We went and saw Dr Doumit on Friday. He is the craniofacial doctor that will eventually be operating on Avery's cleft palate. He said her cleft will be fixed when she is 18 months old. I asked why they wait that long (since everyone keeps asking me) and he said it's beneficial to wait that long for a few reasons:
1.  It is going to form scar tissue and if they do it too soon, it could mess up the formation of her mouth/speech.
2. She will be bigger and will be able to handle the anesthesia better.
3. Her mouth will be bigger and it will be easier to do the surgery than when she is really little.

I asked him to describe the surgery for me. What they typically do is cut a "Z" pattern in the roof of her mouth and then pull the tissue together and stitch it up. They then put a flap of tissue over that(which they get from a tissue bank) for support and sew it up. She will spend the night in the hospital. We will have to feed her through a dropper/syringe. Her arms will be put in restraints for a few days too so she doesn't grab anything. The nurse said the first week of recovery is pretty rough. This is another reason I would like to keep the g tube in. We might need to use it when she is recovering from her surgery. I am happy it will be about a year from now so I have time to save up PTO. Looks like my beach vacation next year will be spending time helping Avery recover (probably sometime in the winter).

Dr Doumit also suggested we have her sleep on her stomach instead of her back. The reason for this is because when she is sleeping on her back, her tongue pushes the roof of her mouth and pushes the cleft open/keeps it open. He said by having her sleep on her stomach, it will help not to make it worse. She is also getting a flat spot on her head so for naps and sleeping we are supposed to prop her on her one side.

We have an appointment with the cleft palate clinic in May. A whole group of specialists are there including Dr Doumit, a dentist, even BCMH (Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps).

This week she seems to be so much more alert and aware of her surroundings. Her favorite thing to do is stare at the white curtains in our living room. We had her in the Rock n Play sleeper and she stared at the curtains for two hours the one day. I know that makes it seem like she has no idea what is going on but whatever, she was very content. I think she even cooed at the curtains a couple times. It was very cute.

We get a little break from appointments this week. She only has one and that is on Thursday with Help Me Grow.

I wanted to share this woman's blog with you. It really puts things into perspective every time I get frustrated about the things that aren't going as expected with Avery. It makes me realize just how lucky we are and that things could be so much worse. She had a baby at 23 weeks and her daughter is 3 years old now and has multiple issues. She has a few things that Avery had/has such as a PDA, g tube, etc but also has a tracheotomy and needs to be on a ventilator at night. Every time I read the blog I cry but it makes me appreciate what we have.

And now for the pictures...

Hanging out with Mommy

Napping with Daddy on the couch

Lily was not excited when I tried to climb on her and ride her

Scarlett doesn't understand tummy time. She thinks you are supposed to put your belly in the air. I am only 5 months old and I know what tummy time is.

My monkey wubanub(pacifier) and I (Thanks again Barb and Abel!)

I am wearing a cute bonnet that was made by Aunt Terri's friend, Cindy. Thanks Cindy for the bonnet, booties and headbands!

Acting like a big girl and napping in my big girl bed

Mommy said she is lucky she has such good insurance. This is the total for my time at Hillcrest. It doesn't include my time at main campus or my surgery. I don't know much about numbers or money but $406,000 seems like a lot! Mommy said she is surprised it wasn't more.

Mommy's friends from Independence CCF bought this bib and I think it's appropriate for me (and probably Mommy, too)

Mommy and I were talking to each other one day

Lily liked me (until I tried to ride her, see above picture)

One of Mommy's best friends, Michelle, came to visit me

Jenny, my cousin, also came to visit and fed me!

This is a horrible picture but Mommy tried to take a pic of my cleft palate. She believes the vertical line on the roof of my mouth is my cleft. Sometimes when I am screaming, it opens a little and you can see a hole. This might just be a bad angle of it

Day 35 at Home- February 13, 2013

We have had 3 doctors appointments in the last 3 days. It has been overwhelming and looking at the number of appointments she has in the future is even more overwhelming.

Monday we went to the pediatrician. He was happy with the amount of weight she is gaining. Looking at the growth chart, he said by the time she is between 9 and 12 months she will be caught up weight wise with "normal" babies. We had to make another appointment in 2 weeks for her 6 month check up. I can't believe she is almost 6 months old already!

Tuesday we had two appointments. The first was with the most beautiful doctor in America, Dr Seifarth..lol. He said her g tube looks really good. She will need to get it replaced with a larger one in about a month. As Avery grows and gets fatter around her tummy, the tube from her stomach to the outside of her body won't be long enough so she needs to get it replaced. The doctor also recommends we keep the feeding tube in for a year. He said most parents get it taken out too soon and then if it needs to be put back in, it's a whole new surgery. When she eventually gets it taken out, the hole in her stomach closes up(and doesn't need stitches) within about 5 hours. He said she should keep it in a year but that doesn't mean we have to use it that long. She will need to get it replaced every 4-6 months because she will be growing like a weed.

After the pediatric surgeon appointment, we had about 20 minutes to spare between our next appointment. We tried bottle feeding Avery at Main Campus. We decided not to lug around her feeding pump and supplies. She didn't do so well feeding out in public.

Next we had the audiologist appointment for her hearing test. This test was not fun. Avery had to be completely still and sleeping for it. This took forever to get her calmed down and sleeping. Avery doesn't really take naps during the day so this was difficult. After 1 hour and 45 minutes, the audiologist had most of the information she needed. She said Avery can hear but not at the level they want her to. They compared her hearing with being underwater. You can still hear but it's very muffled. She seems to think that the sound goes in her ear and just stops, that it doesn't go far enough in where it needs to go. She said she doesn't know if the hearing loss is permanent or not or it could be due to the cleft palate. She is having us make an appointment with the pediatric ENT to see if there is fluid in there, a blockage, or something wrong with her ears. We will then repeat the hearing test after seeing ENT. So there are two more appointments we had to make.

In the next month, she has 10 appointments scheduled, one of those being somewhat of a surgery(to replace the g tube) and 2 others involving shots. Needless to say, she is not going to be a happy camper. She already has multiple appointments scheduled for after I go back to work. It sucks because I won't be able to go to any of them because I won't have any PTO or FMLA left.

On Friday we have an appointment with Dr. Doumit who is the craniofacial surgeon (cleft palate doctor).  Sorry for the long post. Here are a few pictures..

This is me during the horrible hearing test. I had wires all over me and things in my ears.

This is my first real battle wound on my left cheek. Mommy cut my nails but they were sharp and I cut my face. Don't mind my huge belly hanging out of my shirt!

We were all watching tv and I fell asleep on the couch and they took this picture of me.

Daddy and I were laying on the ground together. (See Barb Kasik, I do love the monkey!)
